BEAUTY IS ONLY SKIN DEEP.   NOT!

A healthy mind in a health body - sounds simple and good, YET in our society today this axiom is not the "norm" but a 'rarity'.  Even our athletic 'heroes" with their great physiques fall prey to traps borne early in their infancy.  We try to reach the future generations and educate them in a subject tabooed in our school systems, hidden by parents, and made joke of by peer groups --YOUR BODY.

This subject is invisible until about the age of 13 or so when it emerges as "dirty", "sinful", "ugly", or " just for sex" idea - with all the negative connotations that confront emerging teens.  It seems that there is almost a ritualistic race by parents to "potty train" their young and, once successful, the body of their children disappears - to become just another problem  at menstruation, puberty, opposite sex attraction, and a bad case of the "zits".

The schools can teach complex, abstract subjects in this modern age of computer technology to kindergartners or even pre-school tots, but the anatomy and physiology of something that all humans possess - THEIR BODIES - is usually not approached until perhaps a health class in junior high or a biology class in high school - of course, many students never even take these subjects at all!

Oftentimes you hear college students say "I have to take anatomy and physiology this semester and I hate it - it's so boring."  They never realize that it should be one of most interest to them and, the most enlightening.  Indeed, they loved the talk and idea of sex in high school because it usually centered around the taboos and the sinful, dirty aspects, but take the broader and more wondrous spectrum and it becomes "a drag" - WHY??

These are the persons who grow up not knowing anything about proper nutrition and how to preserve their bodies: taking pills and medications without realizing what effect it may have upon their bodies and minds; without learning how to control the body to reach its physical potential - this also directly applies to handicapped persons.  We are all born with a body - none perfect - and are entrusted with the care, feeding and respect of this "home of our soul" for the duration of our time here on earth.  Our bodies come "with the package" and at a very early age we must learn all we can about what makes it work and what tears it down- most of these are within our capacity to control.

In the new age of high-tech, space-age tech, computer tech and all the other fast approaching techs of the future, it will be more than necessary to sharpen our minds, but more than essential to condition  our bodies for the adventure.

First, we have to understand that there is no such thing as a 'perfect body' - we all assess what we have by looking into a mirror and inevitably there is something or some things we surely would like changed, moved or eliminated.  Even those we think of as beautiful or handsome, i.e., models, movie stars, look at themselves and think that their nose is too large, their eyes too close together, their shape or build not the way they would like, they are too fat, not buxom enough and so on.  There are some things we can change and some we cannot - but we have to work with what we have been given and work to maintain it at its optimum performance from within.

Cosmetics is a trillion dollar business, and while it can mask certain flaws, the inner machine is what permits it to function.

If you are ill or not feeling up to par, it shows in your face whether you are a great beauty or one of the majority of us with average looks.

A healthy body is the treasure chest of life - while being attractive (which is only in the eyes of the beholder anyway) is the overnight case.
